BBC newscaster Carol Malia will help Rotary club members raise money for good causes at the weekend.

The Rotary Club of Hexham will host a marathon at the town’s Tyne Green Country Park on Saturday.

Members can choose to run, walk or amble, but instead of fulfilling the full 26 miles individually, it will be a collective effort.

No fewer than 26 members of the club will walk over a mile each, raising money in the process for Tynedale Hospice at Home, which will receive 90 per cent of the funds.

The remaining 10 per cent will go into the Rotary Club of Hexham’s charity account.

Carol, of BBC Look North, will be the official starter, and will also walk a mile.

Members of the public are welcome to attend provided that they adhere to social distancing measures.

Miles Middleton, president of the Rotary Club of Hexham, said “It is a difficult time to be president of a rotary club as we cannot, of course, undertake many of our fund-raising activities.

“I thought a marathon shared by us all, suitably distanced from one another, might be a way of getting members back together and as well as a way of raising money for a worthy cause.”
