A CLERGYMAN who makes candles for charity is seeking to gauge demand for his services ahead of the Christmas period.

The Rev. Dr John Harrison has raised thousands of pounds for worthy causes by producing the colourful wax creations, under the name Candles4Charity since 1994.

But given the situation with Covid-19 this year, the retired vicar, who lives near Haydon Bridge, is unsure whether demand will be at the same level as in previous years.

He said: “At this time of year I usually start to plan the production schedule for my candles, in anticipation of pre-Christmas and New Year period.

“However, as 2020 has been such a strange year, I thought it wise to gauge the potential strength of demand.”

Rev. Harrison has contacted some local charities and other organisations to establish whether they are planning any fund-raising events at which the candles could be sold.

He said he would be willing to attend seasonal fairs and other events, provided adequate safeguarding was in place.

Candles4Charity started life in the Bridge of Allan in Scotland, then moved to Spittal (Berwick upon Tweed), before relocating to the Tyne Valley in 2010, after Rev. Harrison moved to the Haydon Bridge area.
