POLICE swooped on a Tynedale town last week after a manhunt was launched.

Officers from Northumbria Police confirmed last Thursday they had assisted in an extensive 'search for an individual’ in Haltwhistle.

Police scoured the town in the early hours to help in an investigation being carried out by another force.

News quickly spread around the town and social media became aloft with speculation as to the severity of the incident, after local residents witnessed police set up base in the area and heard helicopters overhead.

It was later confirmed by the West Midlands Police that a man had been arrested on suspicion of murder.

32-year-old David Rogers, of South Shields, was detained in the district in connection with the fatal stabbing of his 26-year-old brother Thomas Rogers in Birmingham.

Thomas was found seriously injured on Saturday, August 22 on the side of a busy road.

Despite being rushed to hospital by emergency services, Thomas sadly died shortly after his arrival.

A post mortem revealed he died as a result of a stab wound to the chest.

David Rogers, of Nora Street, has now been charged with murder and was remanded in custody to appear before Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.

Another brother Samuel Rogers, aged 30, of Sutton-In-Ashfield, and Ryan Hurt, (22), of Mansfield, have already been charged with murder.

Meanwhile, a 40-year-old man has been released with no further action, while a woman, aged 28, and a 15-year-old girl, have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Two women and a man - aged between 24 and 31 - were also arrested in the South Shields and Jarrow areas of the region on suspicion of assisting an offender, but have now been released under investigation.

Detective inspector Stuart Mobberley, of West Midlands Police homicide team, said: “This is another significant development in our investigation.

"However, we are still keen to hear from anyone with information as our inquiries continue.”

Coun. Ian Hutchinson, who represents the Haltwhistle ward on Northumberland County Council, said: “It brings it home when something like this happens -the west of the county is one of the safest places to live.

"It’s a relief police have caught someone. All police forces involved have done their job properly and came to an appropriate conclusion arresting him.”
