A VACANCY has arisen on Prudhoe Town Council after a councillor resigned.
Coun. Brenda Grey, who represented Prudhoe West and Halfway ward, left her post as a councillor.
If 10 requests made by Wednesday, August 19 to the returning officer of Northumberland County Council, an election will be called to fill the vacancy.
However, that would place the council in an unusual position - as the coronavirus crisis means an election could not currently be held.
Speaking at last Wednesday's meeting of Prudhoe Town Council, Sarah Eden, clerk to the council, explained: "We do need to go through the correct procedure, but if an election is called we won't be able to have one.
"We still have an outstanding election that was called previously.
"However, if no election is called, the council would be able to co-opt a new member."
An election for the seat on the council left vacant by the sudden death of Coun. Martin Foster was due to be held earlier this year, but it was cancelled due to the pandemic.
