NEW data has revealed the total number of people in Northumberland who have died from coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

Previously, Public Health England only published the number of cases in the county - but they have now released the number of deaths in local authority areas.

According to PHE's latest figures, the death toll in the county stands at 240 - 38 more than the death toll at Northumbria Healthcare hospitals.

202 people have died at the trust's hospitals, although no new deaths from COVID-19 have been recorded since July 3.

Furthermore, no new cases of the virus were recorded in the county yesterday. The total number of lab-confirmed cases remains at 1,595.

Nationally, the death toll from the virus now stands at 46,511 - an increase of 98 on the previous day.

871 new cases of the virus were confirmed yesterday, bringing the total number of lab-confirmed cases in the UK up to 309,005. 185,980 tests were processed on Friday.

In addition, Public Health England have also published the number of people currently in hospital with COVID-19. There are currently 1,101 people in hospital, with 69 on ventilators.

This is down significantly from the peak of the pandemic on April 12, when there were 19,872 people hospitalised with COVID-19 and 3,301 people on mechanical ventilators.
