PLANS to restart close contact beauty treatments have been quashed after lockdown restrictions were tightened across the country.

Tynedale beauty salon owner, Helen Cass, of Total Beauty, in Hexham, said that the Government’s announcement to push back beauty treatments saw 80 per cent of her bookings cancelled.

“It’s devastating”, she said. “We had clients booked for days and days, we were full from 9am to 7pm.”

Close contact services had been due to resume on August 1.

But restrictions now mean that treatments, including eyebrow threading, facials and eyelash lifts, are not possible until, at least, August 15.

Helen, who celebrated 22 years in business in March, added: “All professional beauty therapists have abided by the rules to the detriment of their bank account, but also their mental and physical health. We found out about the change 20 hours before.

“I love my job and my clients, and I am trying to support Hexham. I am proud of our reputation and we are trying to stay positive.

“The Government has no respect at all – the beauty industry in this country is fantastic.”

The salon is operating on reduced hours, offering Covid-secure treatments such as manicures, pedicures and waxing, with social distancing measures and PPE in place.

Bowling facilities at Wentworth Leisure Centre, owned by Active Northumberland, were also affected by the last-minute change, as well as wedding ceremonies, which can now only be attended by up to 30 people.

From Saturday, face coverings will be made mandatory in more public indoor settings, such as museums, cinemas and libraries, in addition to shops, supermarkets and public transport, as is currently the case.
