THE work of the West Northumberland Food Bank in East Tynedale has been praised by town councillors.

The food banks project coordinator, Sam Gilchrist, delivered a report to Prudhoe Town Council at its meeting on July 29.

Sam said the people of the Tyne Valley had been extremely supportive of the food bank during the pandemic - but admitted tough times are ahead.

She said: "Local people have been extremely generous. I think it's a very good demonstration of how much people care that money and food is coming in and we're in a good position.

"Our suppliers are currently meeting demand, but we do foresee a huge increase in October when furlough ends.

"At present, we are keeping up with demand and can cope with a 100 per cent increase at the moment, but we're bracing ourselves for that big increase in demand."

Sam also explained what work the food bank has been doing in Prudhoe since the start of lockdown, with many new households being supported.

She continued: "We're helping 22 brand new households in Prudhoe directly affected by the pandemic.

"102 adults are being supported in Prudhoe.

"I would like to reassure Prudhoe Town Council that we're doing as much as we can, but let us know if there's anything that will affect the economy in the area."

Coun. Christine Cuthbert praised the work of the foodbanks staff.

She said: "I take my hat off to the volunteers. It's not about providing food, there's a lot of other services. You wear a lot of hats.

"Even for people on furlough, that 20 per cent they've lost is what keeps you above the line. Thank you for all you do for the people of Prudhoe."
