THE Sunday dinner came into prominence during the reign of King Henry VII in 1485.

And today it is as much a tradition as it was a few hundred years ago, spreading from the family dinner table to pubs across the country.

With the news that food will be half prize in restaurants, pubs and cafes across the district for the month of August, we asked readers of the Hexham Courant online the best place in the Tyne Valley for a Sunday roast.

The Carts Bog Inn, in Langley, came highly recommended by readers, with many praising the traditional country pub for its generous portion size and tastiness of produce.

Readers also commented on the drinks selection and the staff.

Jill Griffiths said: "Definitely the Carts Bog.

"Huge portions and always delicious."

Joe Walls agreed, adding: "Big portions, great cooking, fantastic beers and great service."

The Battlesteads Hotel and Restaurant, in Wark, was also amongst the top suggestions for its high quality vegetable and meat selection.

Marjorie Watson said: "Battlesteads at Wark, perfectly cooked vegetables and meat to die for! Staff are second to none!!”

Meanwhile, Joanne Tully thought The Coach House, in Otterburn, deserved to come out on top, not only for its food offering but also for its friendly staffing.

She said: "Amazing food, attention to detail is 100 per cent, nothing is a problem and the staff are very friendly & attentive!

“My favourite place for a Sunday Roast.”

For Marc Hydleman, the decision was a little tougher, citing "we are really spoilt for choice."

He said: "The Beaumont, in Hexham, does a great Sunday lunch, so does The Heart of Northumberland.

“Also, The Carts Bog, near Langley, if you want to get out of town.”

The Shire Gate, on Hexham's Cattle Market, was suggested by readers, including Jennie Wright, who said: "I'm not exaggerating when I say the Shire Gate Cafe is the best dinner I've had in years.

She added: “The Crown Inn, at Humshaugh, is beautiful too.”

For the full package, Peter Burnip suggested High House Farm Brewery and Visitor Centre, near Maften.

He said: "Amazing food served with fabulous ales brewed on the premises.”

Other popular choices included Hexham's The County Hotel and The Dyvels Inn, in Corbridge. The Falcon, in Prudhoe, and Cassia, also in Corbridge, were also mentioned for their carveries.
