THE organiser of a bike ride to raise awareness for the need for better cycling infrastructure in the Tyne Valley has hailed the event a success.

Nick Morphet, who stood as Green Party candidate for Hexham at the 2019 General Election, organised a ride from Hexham to Corbridge, and back, to highlight the need for improved routes between the areas.

He said: “It went well, it was a great event. Everyone was happy and chilled, there was a good vibe.”

Over 100 cyclists met at the Old Bus Station in Hexham town centre on Saturday and at least 65 people were believed to have completed the whole ride.

Mr Morphet said that one member of the party had never cycled to Corbridge before, but now felt confident to do so again with family. He added: “It’s great to hear we’ve encouraged people to get out on their bikes. A few cars overtook dangerously, which illustrates the problem between cyclists and motorists.”

Mr Morphet is now looking to gather feedback on the event with the aim of planning a similar gathering on foot, following concerns that bikes may pose a threat to pedestrians.

Northumberland County councillor for Corbridge, Coun. Nick Oliver, has been fighting for a cycling route between Corbridge and Hexham for the past two years and has recently been backed by county councillor for Hexham East, Cath Homer.

Coun. Homer has recently launched the council’s vision for cycling and walking in the county, with linking Hexham and Corbridge high on the agenda.
