NORTHUMBERLAND Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that investigations are ongoing into the cause of a fire at Stalida Greek Taverna.

The fire broke out yesterday (Saturday, July 11) evening on Hexham's Battle Hill.

Three pumps attended the scene - one from Hexham, one from Prudhoe and one from West Denton.

A spokeswoman for NFRS said: "The fire was in the first-floor kitchen to the rear of the restaurant, no persons or injuries, fire investigations are taking place to investigate the cause."

Stalida said on its social media this morning (Sunday, July 12) that the fire had "pretty much destroyed" the kitchen and that there was smoke damage to the upstairs of the premise. The downstairs, however, was untouched.

The popular restaurant also thanked its customers for their kind words, emergency services workers for their quick response, and vowed to come back stronger then ever.
