A FLOUR mill is donating bags of flour that cannot be sold but is completely wholesome.

Warwick Bridge Corn Mill is giving away, free of charge, flour that is mixed grains.

It comes from batches milled at the beginning and ends of new sacks which makes it unable to be sold but perfectly wholesome for baking bread.

Debra Riddell, co-manager of the mill, decided to give the mixed bags away to local companies and projects that need them and so far has had great feedback.

She said: “There’s nothing wrong with the flour – it’s just mixed grain so can’t be sold so we decided to donate it.

“We put a call out on Facebook just this week and we’ve had a lot of interest.

“We’ve given away what we have this week to the Carlisle Community Covid help group and I’ve got James Rennie School picking up flour next week to do baking with their students.

“I’ve also got a keen amateur baker in Carlisle making bread for community groups using this flour.

“We’re just trying to make all the connections but it’s very exciting that we can take what is typically seen as waste and turn it into a benefit for lots of people.”

During lockdown the mill noticed a shortage of flour and therefore a peak in the demand and currently has 15 regular customers coming to the mill for flour.

Debra plans to keep the idea running after lockdown too.

“It’s come out of the whole Covid-19 thing but we’ll continue to do it forever now,” she continued.

“We understood the value of it but typically millers would just give it to animal feed or food waste, so this is a much better way to do it.

“Were just keen to distribute it as widely as we can.”
