A 9-year-old school girl has raised over £1,500 for Marie Curie Hospice, Newcastle in memory of her late grandad.

Darras Hall Primary School pupil Olivia McCormack has made over 250 face coverings to support the charity which cared for her grandad David Willis, who died of mesothelioma last March aged 72.

The amateur seamstress learnt her trade by watching Youtube tutorials and was helped by mum Suzanne McCormack, who has made over 3,000 scrub bags for NHS workers together with other Darras Hall residents.

And Olivia’s efforts have now been recognised by Marie Curie UK on their social media platforms.

Suzanne said: “£20 will provide an hour of nursing care. She’s done very well, we’re really proud.”
