THE district’s premier beer festival has been hailed a success after taking place via social media.

The annual Tynedale Beer and Cider Festival usually attracts over 5,000 people to Tynedale Rugby Club at Corbridge.

But after this summer’s event was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, organisers came up with the idea of streaming it online into the homes of festival-goers.

More than 12,000 people tuned in, and over £2,000 has been raised for worthy causes so far.

The virtual festival took place over two evenings, on Friday and Saturday, with musical acts combining impressively from their own homes.

A live programme of entertainment included music from Ash from Blistered Molly, Sarah and Stu from Liberty Belle, Stratosphonic, Bad Bob from Ma Kelly’s Boys, Oil Slick Mick from Ma Kelly’s Boys, and Marty Craggs.

All of the musicians gave their time for free, while people taking part were asked to donate the price they would usually pay for a ticket, and a couple of drinks, to the many good causes.

This year’s beneficiaries were Journey, which helps people with complex learning disabilities, Chrysalis Club Tynedale which works with those living with dementia and their families, Northumberland County Blind Association, West Northumberland Foodbank, and Tynedale Rugby Club.

Dads were nominated for a father’s day competition, while food vendors and over 40 brewers made refreshments available for people to pre-order and take home as they enjoyed the festival, which can still be viewed online.
