DEMOLITION work at a former swimming pool has rekindled memories for Tyne Valley residents.

This week bulldozers moved onto the historic site, on Gilesgate in Hexham, which housed the town's swimming pool between 1974 and 2008.

The building will make way for a complex of 45 new flats, although the historic facade will be retained.

Construction on the new apartments is set to get under way later this summer, with a view to overall completion by August 2021.

Our photo gallery shows that the demolition work has revealed parts of the old indoor pool, where many school pupils attended for swimming lessons.

It was also a popular venue for families, with children enjoying the pool's popular inflatables and slide.
