GOLFERS were rewarded for there patience last month after the Government allowed courses to reopen after initial closure as part of nationwide lockdown measures.

While golf courses were closed, many players had to make do with practising their putting and chipping into a bucket in the garden or on their carpet indoors.

But, thanks to an impressive abundance of golf courses throughout Tynedale, the district has been able to re-stake its claim to the home of some of the best golfing conditions in the country after courses reopened their doors.

Despite a lack of fairway and club house action for nearly two months, all courses have been kept in impeccable condition thanks to ardent greenkeepers and record-breaking sunshine.

The Hexham Courant has compiled a list of readers’ suggestions on social media of their favourite golf courses in the local area.

Bellingham Golf Club

Known among locals for its scenic views, rural North Tyne location and friendliness, Bellingham was the most popular course among readers. with many praising its all-round experience.

Pat Batey said: “Known as the friendliest course in the county and one of the best to play. First rate condition.”

Matfen Hall Golf Club

Claire Macklin and Sarah Thompson both recommended the 27-hole golf facility that also boasts a driving range. The club’s gold-standard facilities are one of the many reasons why visitors keep on returning for more action.

Slaley Hall Golf Club

Elaine Gray praised the club’s “two fabulous courses”, with Maggie Lee also nominating the prestigious golf club. Slaley Hall has long been known as one of the region’s premium golfing destinations.

Often nicknamed, ‘The Augusta of the North’, the Hunting course has hosted several flagship events including the European Tour along with PGA Seniors for many years. Its Priestman course is ideal for golfers of all abilities.

Close House Golf Club

Cheryl Carruthers nominated the acclaimed Tynedale course set to the host the British Masters tournament this year.

The club boasts the former world number one Lee Westwood as its touring professional and has become a must-visit for golf fans around the country.

Haltwhistle Golf Club

Nominating Haltwhislte, Russel Mitchell said the West Tynedale golf course is a “lovely place to play golf.” The course’s location provides breathtaking views of Hadrian’s Wall."
