HUNDREDS of people turned out for a Black Lives Matter protest in the North-East early on Saturday afternoon.

Protesters gathered in Newcastle, following a march along Northumberland Street and a rally at Grey's Monument.

Many people wore face masks, but the event went ahead despite warnings over mass gatherings.

It took place less than 24 hours after health secretary Matt Hancock warned people against joining Black Lives Matter protests, pointing out that the UK "is still facing a health crisis and coronavirus remains a real threat".

It is understood that many other protesters chose to stay at home, and took part online.

Demonstrations took place in other parts of the UK on Saturday. They follow the death of African-American man George Floyd, in police custody in America.
