THE number of lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in Northumberland has risen above 1,000 following a sharp spike in cases.

A total of 68 new cases of the virus were confirmed in the county on Sunday, in one of the highest rises the county has seen.

It comes as lockdown restrictions are further relaxed, allowing groups of up to six people to meet in public or private outdoor spaces.

The death toll from Covid-19 at Northumbria Healthcare hospitals now stands at 191, with one new death confirmed on Sunday.

Nationally, there have now been 274,762 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK, an increase of 1,936 on Sunday.

A total of 38,489 people have now died after having a positive test result confirmed by Public Health England or the NHS, an increase of 113 on Sunday.
