A SPORTS-MAD family have taken on a very ambitious challenge, while most of us are struggling for motivation during lockdown.

The Hughes family, from Mickley, made up of Alex (19), Charlotte (16) and twins Tom and Matthew (12) are aiming to cover over 620 miles by May 31 in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Alex, a student at Leeds Beckett University, said: “Cancer has become far too personal for us recently. We found out just after lockdown that our grandfather, who lives in Yorkshire, has terminal cancer and our other grandfather also has cancer. Due to coronavirus we can’t offer the hands on support we would like to, so we thought we’d at least utilise our unspent energy on something worthwhile.”

The family hope to raise £500 by running, walking, and cycling and donations can be made to www.fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/1000-kilometers-in-may.

Alex said: “Our grandparents are used to coming to see us and now we rely on a telephone. It’s really nice to do something to include them.”
