THE North-East continues to maintain the highest coronavirus infection rate in the country as more positive cases of the virus were confirmed in Northumberland.

Public Health England's latest figures show that there have now been 919 lab-confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Northumberland, an increase of two in the past 24 hours. The rate of infection now stands at 286.9 residents per 100,000.

NHS England confirmed the death toll in Northumbria Healthcare Trust hospitals stands at 182.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that 77 people have died at care homes in Northumberland, with the latest figures covering the week ending May 15 - an increase of 12 on the previous week.

Across the North-East, 782 people have died from the virus in care homes, up from 641 in the week ending May 8.

Nationally, there have been 248,818 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus.

The total number of deaths stands at 35,704.
