NEW figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have shown the number of fatalities in Northumberland care homes due to coronavirus.

Seventy-seven people have now died at care homes in the county, with the latest figures covering the week ending May 15 - an increase of 12 on the previous week.

Across the North-East, 782 people have died from the virus in care homes, up from 641 in the week ending May 8.

Public Health England's latest figures show that there have now been 917 lab-confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Northumberland, an increase of two in the past 24 hours. The rate of infection now stands at 286.3 residents per 100,000.

NHS England confirmed that there were four more deaths yesterday at Northumbria Healthcare hospitals, with the death toll now standing at 181.

Nationally, there have been 248,818 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus, an increase of 2,412 on the previous day.

A further 545 deaths were recorded on Tuesday, bringing the total up to 35,341.
