MORALE is being lifted at Hexham hospital by its unofficial mascot - Yang the cat.

The 10-year-old ginger feline has proved a hit at Hexham General Hospital, where he spends time with the patients, and even falls asleep on top of ambulances.

Every morning, Yang makes the journey from his home behind the hospital, through back gardens and paths, before safely using a crossing on a main road to reach his destination.

The pet is so popular among patients and staff he now has his own Facebook page.

His owner Glynis Bell (48) said: “I’m so proud of him. He’s taken it upon his little paws to go and be around people that need him.

“He makes his own way there and he makes his own way back.

“He has a knack with the cancer patients when they come outside. On a nice day, he will sit with them on the chair outside and relax with them.”
