CHURCH services have continued across Tynedale despite many closing their doors to the public.

Although congregation have been unable to attend church buildings, worship has continued through social media and other community platforms.

The Gate Church, in Prudhoe, led by pastors Bert and Margaret Boonstra, prepared worship packs, ensuring they were able to deliver their Mother’s Day service on Sunday to homes.

The packs were to complement audio messages of hope, love and faith on the church’s website.

Mr Boonstra said: “We take the advice of the NHS very seriously but we want to encourage people to keep their faith.”

And in line with the government’s advice, Hexham Abbey has also closed until further notice.

However, the clergy will continue to say the daily offices at home and pray for the community.

Meanwhile, the Moorland Group of Churches, which includes Edmundbyers, Slaley and Whittonstall, delivered their Sunday service from St Mary the Virgin, Slaley, via a live stream on their Facebook page.

The Reverend Helen Savage said: “Considering the page only went live on Thursday, the community response was amazing.

“We now plan to ring the bells at 9am and 5pm daily, so people we know we are still thinking of them.”
