A DOCUMENTARY featuring a Hexham woman has been nominated for another prestigious award.

Vicki Dillon starred in The Parkinson’s Drug Trial: A Miracle Cure?, which hit screens on BBC 2 last February.

Vicki was one of the first six people in the world to undergo a radical new treatment which saw a protein called glial cell derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) administered directly to the brain.

From 2012, Vicki was followed by film-maker Jemima Harrison, whose production company Passionate Productions created the documentary.

The two-part documentary has now been nominated in the Science and Natural History category at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards 2020.

The awards span all genres of British television and celebrate the best entertainment the country has to offer.

The nomination follows The Parkinson Drug Trial’s success at the Grierson Awards, winning in the best science documentary category.

Vicki hopes the publicity will help her campaign to bring forward another trial for GDNF.

She said: “I’m pleased that the documentary and GDNF are back in the limelight.

“We’re hoping that our campaign isn’t falling on deaf ears. There’s some positive developments coming soon.

“We’ve never lost faith. This treatment is life-changing.

“I’m proud to have been part of medical history in the marking, and every bit of publicity is good publicity.

“It’s keeping GDNF in the public consciousness.”

The Parkinson’s Drug Trial is up against other BBC2 documentaries 8 Days: To the Moon and Back and The Planets.
