YOUNG farmers from the Whitley Chapel club have been crowed winners of the Northern Area Drama Final, with their performance of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes.

The victory has earned them a place in the final of the National Young Farmers’ Clubs performing arts competition.

The club triumphed against competition from Cumbria A, B and C teams, who performed sketches of Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and The Three Little Pigs.

Cumbria A, made up of Brampton Young Farmers, will join Whitley Chapel in the national final, held in Leamington, Warwickshire, on April 25 and 26.

The two-day showdown will see eight clubs from across the country tread the boards one last time in a bid to secure the coveted top spot.

Matthew Harding, Whitley Chapel Young Farmers’ Club chairman, said: “This will actually be our fifth national final since 2012 with all of the performances coming from producer Lewis Short.

“Northumberland has won the nationals twice, once in the 80’s, with a pantomime from Stamfordham Young Farmers, and later in 2015.

“The competition considers all kinds of performing arts.

“This year is drama, and the last time Northumberland reached the final was in 2004, with Zoo, by Whitley Chapel.”
