PEOPLE in Tynedale faced widespread disruption on Monday after snow caused travel delays, road accidents and school closures.

Much of Tynedale woke up to a blanket of snow on Monday morning and many commuters’ journeys to work were impacted by trouble on the roads.

A crash on the A69 westbound at Throckley caused delays for traffic joining the A69 from Newcastle. Meanwhile a crash on the A69 eastbound in the same area caused delays with tail backs to Wylam during the morning rush hour.

Conditions on the A68 were difficult with traffic coming to a standstill at Carter Bar.

There was also heavy traffic around Hexham where there had been a three-vehicle collision on Causey Hill Way after a vehicle collided with a stationary car.

A police spokeswoman said no-one was believed to have sustained serious injuries and the road reopened that morning. Many minor roads were also blocked due to broken down or stuck vehicles.

And schools including Hexham First School, Otterburn, Whitley Chapel, Whittonstall, Wark Kielder, Greenhaugh, Bellingham Primary and Middle Schools were closed.

Rain and rising temperatures by Monday afternoon meant conditions improved for the majority of areas by later that day.

But this caused flooding in some areas including the area near the railway crossing in Prudhoe. There was another cold start on Wednesday morning as icy conditions hit higher ground following another warning from the Met Office.
