RESIDENTS in Hexham are being urged to report crimes to help police tackle issues in the town.

At the last Hexham Town Council meeting, Coun. Derek Kennedy told councillors about a number of residents who had told him about things being stolen from their cars.

It comes after reports to both police and councillors of thefts from vehicles as well as burglaries to sheds and outbuildings.

“There seems to be little pockets all over the town taking place,” he said.

“Can we get the message out there to residents to ensure that any valuables are hidden away of removed from your vehicle?

“There has been quite a number of people and many people hadn’t actually reported this to the police because it’s very low level.”

Due to crimes not being reported to police, councillors were concerned that police weren’t aware of the full scale of crimes in the area so they could not tackle them appropriately.

“We recognise that Hexham is not a crime capital by a long shot but it is worrying,” added Coun. Kennedy.

Coun. Trevor Cessford said he had recently met with Hexham Neighbourhood Sergeant Kate Benson.

He added: “The key point is that police weren’t aware of a lot of this stuff. It shows that reporting is key if there is a crime happening.

“If those little things get reported the police can stop it.”
