The winners of Northumberland County Council’s Winter Mini Reading Challenge have been announced.

Libraries across Northumberland encouraged children to continue their reading journey during the Christmas holidays.

Youngsters were to read three stories of their choice while collecting tokens each time they visited the library, which were posted through a special seasonal box.

Matthew Quarmby (4), of Ovington, and Art Taylor-Shields (8), a pupil at Ovingham First School, were crowned winners of the competition at Prudhoe Library in the Spetchells Centre. Dylan Watts (5) was victorious at Hexham Library and was awarded his prize by visiting author Alan Windram.

Coun. Cath Homer, cabinet member for culture, arts, leisure and tourism supported the scheme. “The benefits of reading from a young age are well known,” she said.
