FLOOD warnings are now in place for the River South Tyne and the River Rede as heavy rainfall and strong winds continue to batter Tynedale.

Officials at the Environment Agency said flooding is expected and immediate action is required to protect land and property near the river South Tyne at Haltwhistle and Haydon Bridge, and the River Rede at Otterburn, West Woodburn and Redesmouth.

Local reports suggest roads surrounding Otterburn Mill, and the road between Bellingham and Otterburn, are currently impassable due to flood water.

Checks carried out between 6am and 9am on Sunday morning indicate that river levels are expected to remain high until at least 3pm.

The warnings are among 132 currently in place across England with a further 159 flood alerts, urging residents to be prepared for flooding, also issued.

The River Tyne at Hexham, Corbridge and Bywell; the River Rede at Otterburn; the South Tyne at Alston, Featherstone, and Warden; and the North Tyne at Kielder are all being monitored.

The impact of Storm Ciara has already prompted the closure of English Heritage Sites along Hadrian's Wall including Chesters Roman Fort, Corbridge Roman Town, Housesteads Roman Fort and Birdoswald Roman Fort.
