A RESPECTED scout leader was given a surprise himself when he nominated his friend for a community award.
David Hefferin, a leader at Hexham Scouts, had contacted Guy Opperman to say fellow leader David Newman deserved one of the awards handed out by the Hexham MP.
Unbeknown to him, Cath Homer, the Northumberland county councillor for Hexham East, had also been in touch with Mr Opperman to request Mr Hefferin receive one too.
The pair have dedicated more than 67 years of voluntary service to 1st Hexham Scout Group.
