CUMBRIA Police have confirmed that a police vehicle was involved in a 'serious' crash on the M6 near Carlisle.
The crash - which happened at about 2pm - closed the motorway in both directions between junctions 43 and 44 for more than seven hours.
Drivers heading north and south were urged to take an alternative route while emergency services dealt with the incident.
In an update at 9pm, a spokesman said: "The M6 Northbound has reopened following a collision earlier today.
"The Southbound carriageway is expected to open in an hour (by 11pm)."
Fire crews from the city, plus the North West Ambulance Service were both called to the scene.
