POLICE are investigating after thieves targeted Hexham's most iconic landmark.

A window was smashed at Hexham Abbey's Refectory Cafe at around 5.30am on Thursday.

It is understood beer and wine was taken from a fridge in the cafe, but nothing else was stolen.

The alarm was activated, and Abbey staff were immediately notified of the incident via the security system.

General manager Owen Mills said: "It's sickening that anybody would want to target the Abbey. There was nothing in the till, and we think they've made off with some beer and wine from the cafe."

Mr Mills said a window had previously been broken at the Abbey's parish office, while the place of worship had also suffered from daytime donation box thefts, in the past.

Events manager Jez Light said: "Our alarm system ensured staff were instantly made aware of this, and that has enabled us to contact the police. We have a good security system in place, but we will be reviewing this further."

Foot prints from the intruders were visable on a bench inside the cafe, beneath the broken window.

The cafe was set to open for business as usual on Thursday.

Northumbria Police have been contacted for comment.
