THANKS to a glowing food reputation, a head chef had been highlighted as one to watch.

Swedish chef Alex Nietosvuori is rounding 2019 off in style after being chosen as one of the under-30 rising stars in the industry by CODE – a leading authority on UK hospitality.

Alex, who opened up Restaurant Hjem in the village of Wall with his Northumberland-born partner Ally Thompson earlier this year, said he was delighted to be chosen.

At only 27, Alex has worked at some of the most raved restaurants across the world, including Scandinavia, Sweden, Chile and London.

“It’s a real pleasure and honour to be listed alongside such great talent in the industry and I’m so pleased that what we have created at Hjem is getting national attention,” he said.

“I’m also very proud to be helping to fly the flag for Northumberland, showcasing the region as a place to come for wonderful food adventures. We love welcoming people to our Hjem and are looking forward to what the future holds.”

Alex’s inclusion on CODE’s list is the latest in a list of accolades he has racked up in its first seven months.

His mix of local and Scandinavian cuisine racked up entries in both The Good Food Guide 2020 and The Michelin Guide 2020, and boasts a 100 per cent five-star record on consumer review site TripAdvisor – proving it’s not just the professional critics who have been charmed by the restaurant.

“We’ve been absolutely blown away with the reception Hjem has been given in the short time since we opened,” added Ally. “From guests to critics, we’re delighted that what we’re doing is being so well received.”

“When 2019 started, Hjem was still a dream on a piece of paper. It’s been an incredible journey already with a lot of hard work from every member of our brilliant team and we can’t wait to see what 2020 brings.”
