A man was robbed of his wallet after being assaulted during a 'disturbing' gang attack in Ulverston.

Police are investigating the robbery and assault which happened between 10 pm and 10.30pm on Wednesday night close to the community centre in Lund Terrace.

A man was approached by a group of between six and eight men in the street before being assaulted. They then stole his wallet.

The suspects were reportedly sat in both a blue car and a silver car on Lund Terrace immediately before the robbery occurred.

One of the suspects is described as being a white man, around 19-21 years old, of slim build, 5ft11 with blonde permed hair.

Another of the suspects is described as a black man, 5ft10, of slim build, wearing dark clothing.

All of the suspects are described as wearing coverings over their lower face.

Councillor Mark Wilson said it was 'highly out of the ordinary' as Ulverston did not have a high incidence of violent crime.

"It is very untypical of Ulverston," he said.

"It is something that is so out of the ordinary that it makes it very unusual.

"I imagine the police will have a bigger presence on the streets now in response to this incident.

"I saw some PCSOs out and about today.

"Whenever there is an incident, or the town council requests it, you do tend to have an increased visible presence out on the streets.

"We don't tend to get a lot of violent crime in Ulverston and I'm disturbed by this.

"I trust it won't happen again and I hope the poor man who was assaulted is able to make a full recovery and nothing like this happens again.

"Hopefully he will have given a good description to the police and I don't doubt they'll be checking nearby CCTV cameras."

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact police on 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting log 256 of the 11th December.

Police are asking that the public do not approach the suspects if spotted.
