ORGANISERS of this year’s Prudhoe People’s Treat have proclaimed the 2019 event as the best yet.

Just as they have for well over a century, hundreds of people attended the event over three days and were treated to a free drink on arrival, hot soup, a turkey and ham salad, and buffet.

The treat is organised by a team of volunteers and is free for any Prudhoe resident aged over 60 years old.

Organiser Wilton Homes said: “It’s the best year we’ve had. The atmosphere has been amazing.”

The team is led by Lynn Ivison, who said that the reception the treat got from attendees made all the hard work worthwhile.

Lynn said: “We’re a committee of seven and we all pull together. We all have our own strengths.

“This doesn’t just happen in December. We’re having a meeting in January to start planning for next year.

“It’s over 100 years old, you can’t let a tradition like that die. It’s hard work, but it’s worth it when you see all the faces. People can’t get over what they get.”

Guests enjoyed a programme of entertainment as well as free food, but most say it’s seeing old friends for a catch-up that is the most enjoyable part.

Pauline Ridley said: “We all look forward to it, it’s great fun. I haven’t seen some of the people here since last year.

“That’s why we come here. You get great entertainment and a three course meal. It’s beautifully done and the volunteers work so hard. It’s exciting and you have a lovely meal. What more could you ask for?”
