CHRISTMAS has arrived in Tynedale, signalled by the switch-on of the festive lights in Hexham and Prudhoe.

A host of entertainment was on offer for the hundreds of visitors in both towns. In Hexham, the middle school’s orchestra kicked off the celebrations at 4.15pm, playing Christmas carols at the bandstand.

Santa himself arrived shortly afterwards, speaking to children while his helpers dished out sweets, donated by Listers Biscuit Box.

The main man then switched on the lights at the Christmas Tree in the market place, before the Abbey boy choristers sang carols around the Abbey’s piano.

The Abbey was the centre-stage for the second part of the evening – dubbed the festival of flame – which saw the historic building illuminated by candlelight while live music played.

In Prudhoe, the Spetchells centre played host to a Christmas Fair, with an assortment of party games and prizes on offer for families with youngsters.

Outside, there were plenty of mince pies, biscuits, juice and mulled wine to enjoy – all courtesy of Prudhoe Co-op.

Iain Watt, store manager at Prudhoe Co-op said “The Christmas lights switch-on is a fantastic family event that brings the community together and kick-starts the festive season for the town.

“The lights really bring the Front Street to life.

“We are proud to support and get involved with this initiative. Long may it continue.”
