Volunteers from the county dominated this year’s UK National Parks Volunteer Awards.

The awards, which took place earlier this month, recognised the outstanding contribution that volunteers make in helping to care for national park landscapes.

Local volunteer Katie Armstrong, who started volunteering at the Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre in July 2018, won the Young Person Award.

Katie previously studied on a ‘Learning for Life’ course, which equips young people living with a disability with the skills needed to enter into employment.

South Tyne Sustainability, a volunteer-run group which aims to raise awareness of environmental issues and promote conservation and sustainable lifestyle choices, received the Group Award.

Volunteers work in Haltwhistle and surrounding areas.
