NORTHUMBRIA Police have encouraged anyone who witnesses reckless driving on a narrow town street to report their concerns.

It came after a member of the public raised the issue about large vehicles using Market Street in Hexham, at last week’s Hexham Town Council meeting, stating that sometimes the vehicles are going up on to the pavement.

The problem was reportedly made worse after large vehicles were banned from using Hallstile Bank.

Neighbourhood inspector Pam Bridges, who attended the meeting, said: “At this time, while we have done some patrols enforcement in the area, we can’t be there 100 per cent of the time. We have done work with local businesses and we have visited local businesses but unfortunately the environment we have got does present this issue.

“What I would say is if anybody is endangered and feels that they have been subject of reckless or dangerous driving that needs to be reported to the police there and then.”

She said that the area remained a part of the patrol area for the neighbourhood policing team.

County councillor Trevor Cessford said vehicles should be waiting for each other to pass where the street becomes narrow outside of Save the Children, not using the pavement.

And Coun. Cath Homer added that she would pass a letter from those who had raised the issue on to Northumberland County Council.
