HEXHAM Town Council has said it is ready to listen to suggestions from local people who can help it make the town more sustainable.

The council agreed at its September meeting to implement a 19-point sustainability plan, aiming to make the town carbon neutral by 2030.

Later that month there were demonstrations in the town as part of the global climate change protest.

At last week’s meeting of Hexham Town Council, a member of the public spoke to ask how people could support the council with its plans.

She said: “One of the young people made reference to your 19-point sustainability plan and was urging the assembled people to support it. I wondered how you might be able to help him and other young people or indeed residents of Hexham to help implement it.”

Mayor of Hexham Bob Hull said: “I think we as a council are ready to listen to any suggestions that anybody wants to make and I’m sure that the planning and infrastructure committee, which is dealing with the implementation of the sustainability action plan, would be delighted to hear from people.”

He suggested people either put their ideas in writing or get in touch with the chairman of that committee, Coun. Tom Gillanders.

Coun. Gillanders said the committee had added the plan to its monthly agenda in order to get regular updates on progress with each of the points.
