Northumberland County Council is planning a programme of activities in the run up to International Women’s Day on Sunday, March 8, 2020.

Plans are being proposed to launch several initiatives between November, 2019 and March, 2020, including a celebration of inspirational women of Northumberland, a variety of competitions aimed at schools and community groups, as well as the launch of a special award for Northumberland’s inspirational young women, all culminating in a celebration event at the beginning of March.

The 2020 theme for International Women’s Day campaign is #EachForEqual – promoting development towards a gender equal world. The theme aims to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions and celebrate women’s achievements.

Coun. Cath Homer, cabinet member for culture, arts, leisure and tourism said: “This annual initiative has provided us with the ideal opportunity to celebrate women within our community in a variety of ways.

“This year we plan for our staff, schools and members of the public to come together to promote equality across Northumberland. Our planned programme will feature inspirational women from all walks of life across Northumberland, as well as offering prize-funding as part of creative and cultural competitions.”

Coun. Wayne Daley, cabinet member for children’s services said: “It’s really important for us to raise awareness of the issue of gender equality with young people in schools. Both girls and boys will have the opportunity to take part in our initiatives, and I look forward to seeing their work in the spring.”

The authority said more information and announcements on the International Women’s Day 2020 campaign will be promoted online via the website at www.northumberland.gov.uk
