THOUSANDS of poppies have lined a prominent street in Hexham in a poignant display of remembrance.

More than 5,000 poppies, which have been knitted and crocheted by people from Hexham and beyond, were placed along the railings on Beaumont Street this week.

Newly-made poppies have been added to those created last year to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Hexham Abbey volunteer June Oliver, who helped organise the effort, said: “I would love to give a big thank you to everybody.

“Some people have done hundreds and some have done half a dozen, but they are all so special.”
