A TOWN centre bank has reopened after it was forced to close when its ceiling collapsed.

The ceiling came down in the Priestpopple branch of Barclays bank in Hexham on Friday, September 20.

Both staff and customers were understood to be in the branch at the time, but no one was hurt.

But a spokeswoman for Barclays said the bank reopened on Saturday.

“The whole of the ceiling in the banking hall has been replaced, and we are now fully reopen,” she said. “We are sorry for any inconvenience that was caused to our customers.”

While the store was closed customers were advised to use the Prudhoe branch of Barclays on Front Street.

Meanwhile, the Prudhoe branch is among more than 100 branches which has been secured until at least October 2021. Barclays has pledged to put a freeze on bank closures in remote areas or where they are the only bank in town.
