FOOTBALLERS from Ponteland Middle School headed for Barcelona this week to represent England at the Danone Nations World Cup.

The girls’ team will attempt to work their way through the stages of the competition, in a bid to reach the World Cup final, which will take place at the RCDE Stadium, on Sunday.

The team qualified for the international tournament, for children aged 10-12, against all odds last year, when they memorably won the English Schools’ FA Danone Nations Cup.

They were among 3,000 school teams from across the country to enter the competition, and were successful at the final at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

Pupils from Ponteland Middle School turned out to wish their star footballers luck as they boarded the bus earlier this week, to set off on their journey to Barcelona.
