IN the first event held to pay tribute to a founding member, a new record was set at an annual marrow show.

James Walby’s entry, weighing in at a whopping 30kg, was the largest marrow ever submitted in the Barrasford Arms Marrow Show, which was dedicated to committee member and auctioneer John Henderson, who passed away shortly after last year’s show.

Members of the show have decided to purchase a memorial bench in his honour, which will be placed in the front garden of the pub.

Club treasurer Duncan Coulson said: “To call him a legend would not be an overstatement, and, in fact, would be quite apt.

“He was the auctioneer at the show over the years and always very entertaining. He was at the front and centre when it came to having a good laugh and a jolly up at the show.

“The bench will be something to always remember him and honour all his hard work.”

During this year’s show, a total of £1,500 was raised and the proceeds will be split between North East Alzheimers’ Society, Great North Air Ambulance Service and Barrasford Football Club.
