A CHARITY was bowled over by the generosity shown by local sportspeople through various fund-raising ventures throughout the year.
Mark Terry, the president of Hexham Elvaston Bowling Club, chose Tynedale Hospice at Home as the club’s charity of the year, and he and his clubmates raised a total of £610.
Highlight of the fund-raising activities was a concert from local a capella group the Hex Pistols, who donated half their booking fee.
Mr Terry also organised a bowls match consisting teams picked by this year’s club president and last year’s equivalent, with a buffet meal included.
Club fines, dished out for minor issues such as etiquette, were collected and added to the fund-raising total, as were the amounts raised through raffles and two ‘spiders’, where bowlers compete to get their ball nearest to the white jack.
