GARY Cunningham excelled at this year’s Haydonian Leek Club in Haydon Bridge.
The experienced grower won the pot leek category at the event, which took place at the village’s Haydonian Social Club, with an impressive entry of 219 cu ins.
He also came second in the blanch leeks section with exhibits measuring 193 cu ins.
Second in the pot leeks was Paul Makepeace, with a stand of 129 cu ins, while Mick Smith was third with exhibits measuring 130 cu ins.
In the blanch leeks section, Alan Barker was the champion, with leeks measuring 236 cu ins. Ernie Edwards was third, with a stand of 160 cu ins.
The evening, on September 14, was well attended, with local growers also exhibiting other vegetables.
Entertainment was provided by an Elvis Presley impersonator, who performed a repertoire of the American singer’s classic songs.
