PLANS for two new schools in Hexham have come under scrutiny from the community for the first time.

Two consultation events were held at the Winter Gardens at Queen Elizabeth High School on Wednesday and Saturday last week.

From September 2021, middle school pupils will move into brand new buildings on the existing high school site at Whetstone Bridge, where new buildings for the high school children will also be created.

Ali Wilkinson, who has a child in each school, said: “My reason for coming along was to find out how it’s going to impact the education of my children.

“I think it’s a good idea, and I feel a lot more comfortable now I know the work is out the back of the current site.

“To me, having both schools on the same site isn’t a big deal. The middle school will still be separate.

“I think it’s quite a positive step.”
