A FORMER student at Ponteland High School has had her work recognised with a prestigious award.

Dr Pen Holland received an innovative teaching award from the Vice Chancellor of the University of York.

Pen obtained her first class honours degree in maths at York, then her masters and PhD while working at the Central Science Lab, now associated with DEFRA.

After several years in New Zealand, followed by two stints at universities in the South, she returned to York to take up a post as a lecturer at the university.

The award recognised Pen’s work in enthusing her students and postgraduates with schemes she has devised involving the use of Lego, Raspberry Pi and most recently a card game called “Catastrophic”.

Pen thanked Ponteland High School’s maths department after receiving the award.
