HEXHAM’S MP Guy Opperman has said that any further extension to Brexit would be “deeply regrettable”.

The UK is set to leave the European Union on October 31 although parliament was suspended for five weeks on Tuesday.

The suspension will run from September 10 until October 14. Critics claimed prime minister Boris Johnson was using the suspension to stifle debate over Brexit, with MPs having around six days to debate a no-deal exit on October 31.

Mr Opperman campaigned to remain in the 2016 referendum, but said: “We must deliver on the result of the referendum. We have to leave.”

“I have always been clear that I would prefer to leave the EU with a deal,” he added. “I will continue to argue for a negotiated agreement as the best way for us to leave the EU.

“I hope that the prime minister will be able to secure a deal that can command a majority in the House of Commons, so that we can leave with a deal as soon as possible.”

On Monday, the prime minister lost his second bid for a snap general election after MPs voted against it.
