Police are hunting an attacker who assaulted a man with a sharp weapon near a popular Cumbrian beauty spot.

Officers were called at about 1.20pm yesterday to a report of a man suffering stomach wounds after being attacked by the road adjacent to the railway line, north of Talkin Tarn, Brampton.

The victim, a local man in his thirties, was taken by ambulance to Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary as a precaution.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: "The injuries are not believed to be serious at this time.

"The type of weapon used is not yet known but is believed to be some type of sharp instrument."

The attacker left the scene in a dark coloured pick-up vehicle with a silver, double wheel based farm trailer on the back, similar to a cattle transporter.

It is believed a second person was in the vehicle.

The assailant was described as being about 25 and about 5ft 9ins tall. He was wearing a dark coloured jacket with a grey hoody, blue jeans and white trainers and wore a baseball cap.

He spoke with an eastern European accent.

Officers are appealing for anyone who may have seen the vehicle before, during or after the assault, or anyone else with information which might assist, to come forward.

They also would like to speak to anyone who may have dashcam footage of the area at that time.
