WHAT will happen to the premises of Beales department store when it closes?
It's hard to see new shop units taking its place. There is always the possibility of residential housing. But the likelihood is it will remain empty for several years, and the centre of Hexham will deteriorate.
Meanwhile, the planned development of Hexham High school will go ahead with all its attendant problems: including increased school traffic in residential roads, safety hazards for road users, congestion, increased school traffic and pollution, the probable cutting down of beautiful trees and the destruction of one of the most beautiful Victorian gardens in England.
I suggest that the whole plan is stopped and and a new idea debated to go ahead with all the improvements to Hexham High School, but to relocate Hexham Middle School to the site of Beales.
